Abstract

In August 2008, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted an archaeological survey at the site of the proposed bridge replacement at CR 23/Davis Academy Road over Big Indian Creek in Morgan County, Georgia. The total length of the project is 0.37 miles. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that one previously identified archaeological site (9MG21) has been reported in the proposed project area. The portion of 9MG21 within the current APE has been destroyed by road construction and residential grading. One archaeological site, 9MG669, was identified in the project APE. Site 9MG669 is located on a terrace east of Big Indian Creek. The site is recommended as of unknown eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The portion of the site within the current project's APE exhibits low artifact density. Overall, the research potential of this portion of the site in the project APE is low. Therefore, the portion of 9MG669 within the APE does not contribute to the site's eligibility. It is recommended the project be allowed to proceed as planned within the current APE.
