Abstract

This project proposes to replace a structurally deficient bridge on SR 16 over Little Ogeechee River, 3.4 miles east of Sparta, Georgia. The existing roadway consists of two 12-ft travel lanes in each direction with 6-ft rural shoulders. The existing right-of-way for SR 16 is 100-ft. The proposed roadway shall consist of two 12-ft travel lanes in each direction with 10-ft rural shoulders. State Route 16 will be realigned to the south approximately 64-ft. Additional right-of-way will be required for this project and will vary from 0-ft to 90-ft along the south side of the new alignment. Total length of the project is approximately 0.46 mile. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, since no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence form the State Historic Preservation Officer is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
