Abstract

The proposed project shall consist of the replacement of a structurally deficient bridge on SR 16 over Two Mile Creek, 1.8 miles east of Sparta, Georgia. The existing roadway consists of two 12-ft travel lanes in each direction with 6-ft rural shoulders. Existing right-of-way for SR 16 is 100-ft. The proposed roadway will consist of two 12-ft travel lanes in each direction with 10-ft rural shoulders. State Route 16 will be realigned to the south approximately 64-ft. Additional proposed right-of-way shall vary between 0-ft to 75ft along the south side of the new alignment. The approximate total length of this project is 0.64 mile. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. Three archaeological sites, 9Hk282, 9Hk283, and 9Hk284, were identified within the project's area of potential effect (see attached eligibility recommendations and site forms). Site 9Hk282 has an unknown eligibility recommendation with the portion of the site in the APE not contributing to the overall eligibility. Site 9Hk283 is recommended as ineligible for listing the NRHP. Site 9Hk284 has an unknown eligibility recommendation with the portion of the site in the APE not contributing to the overall eligibility. Since no existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded that the project will have no effect upon archeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
