Abstract

From January to April 2008, Edwards-Pitman Environmental Inc. (EPEI) conducted an archaeological survey of the proposed State Route (SR) 44 improvements project in Putnam and Greene Counties, Georgia. As a result of the survey findings, Phase II archaeological testing was conducted at one site in October 2008. The proposed project would consist of widening SR 44 from two to four lanes from Eatonton to Greensboro, Georgia. Research at the Georgia Archaeological Site File (Athens) indicated that ten previously recorded archaeological sites are located in or adjacent to the current project Area of Potential Effect (APE). These locations were revisited during the present study. Artifacts and/or historic (over 50 years old) cultural features were identified at only four of these sites. Field survey indicated that 9PM606, a mill site with surviving structural features, is outside, but adjacent to, the project APE. The survey of the project corridor resulted in the identification of 20 previously unrecorded archaeological sites and eight isolated finds.
