Abstract

On 27 February 1.982, an initial archaeological reconnaissance and cultural resources assessment was conducted at the four acre site of the proposed Temple boat landing on the Saint Marys River, Camden County, Georgia. This small recreational facility is to be located approximately 7 miles west of Kingsland, Georgia about one mile south of Georgia Highway 40. Dense ground cover obscured the surface over much of the site. Accordingly, a limited subsurface testing of the area was selected as the most practical and efficient method of locating and evaluating any cultural resources that might exist within the project area. Nine 50 centimeter square test excavations were made along the main baseline transect and along other perpendicular transects. Additional, random, searches were made of the bases of tree falls and rodent burrows throughout the area. No prehistoric or historic cultural material was found except a heavy scatter of modern (post-1970) debris around the landing site proper. The lack of cultural material-is attributed to the very low nature of the land which nowhere exceeds eight feet above the level of the river.
