Abstract

This paper discusses the results of the analysis of artifacts from 49 nineteenth and twentieth century graves from the Nancy Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Chamblee, Georgia. The research results indicated that few elements of coffin hardware were included on coffins buried before the 1870s, while coffins that dated after that time often included elaborate functional and decorative hardware. The few items of coffin hardware within pre-1870s graves were restricted to coffin hinges and coffin tacks with white metal heads, while later graves included coffin handles, thumbscrews and escutchion plates, and other elements. The temporal ranges of various hardware types are discussed, and a tentative seriation of coffin handle types is presented. Clothing and other types of artifacts found within the graves are also discussed.
