Abstract

In July of 1985, an electrical soil resistivity survey was conducted at Andersonville National Historic Site. The area surveyed was projected to be the location of the "shed hospital," the last of three hospitals providing medical care to federal prisoners.. Previous archeological investigations by Ellen B. Ehrenhard in 1978 revealed features thought to be remnants of .hospital buildings or its enclosing stockade. Because the horizontal exposure provided by Ehrenhard's excavations was limited, it was anticipated that some form of remote sensing could provide evaluation of the area without the effort and cost of excavation. This project was designed to test the feasibility of using soil resistivity survey, a remote sensing method, to locate subsurface features remaining from the time of construction and use of the facility (ca. 1864-1865).
