Abstract

In recommending a certain amount of archeological excavation at Buford the purely scientific considerations have been tempered by the realization that this, after all, can be no more than an emergency salvage undertaking. The minimum requirements, then, appear to be as follows: a small excavation at the important mound site 9 HL 64; smaller excavations at 6 other sites; and a search, including several deep soundings, for a buried deposit of the very ancient Flowery Branch Focus. Such a program could be carried out by one archeologist, a laboratory assistant, and a crew of five laborers. The labor would be needed for about 13 weeks, but the archeologist and laboratory assistant should be employed for a period of approximately 8 months to enable them to prepare the data for scientific publication.
