Abstract

A cultural resources survey of the approximately 2,500 acre Savannah Quarters Tract Southwest Quadrant was conducted by Brockington and Associates, Inc. 13 November-1 December 1995 for the owner, Mr. Glen Hall. The work was undertaken in compliance with current state and federal regulations regarding the management of cultural resources on private lands. Seven archaeological sites (9Ch859-9Ch865) and eight isolated finds were identified during the survey. All of the sites and the isolated finds are recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No further management consideration is recommended for these resources. Two previously recorded sites (9Ch825 and 9Ch688) also are located within the project tract. Site 9Ch825 is recommended not eligible for the NRHP. Site 9Ch688 is recommended eligible for the NRHP. Construction activities within the Savannah Quarters Tract should be designed to avoid alteration of the canal. If major land disturbing activities cannot avoid the canal, appropriate mitigation of the area to be disturbed should be undertaken. Two extant historic structures (Ch218 and Ch219) are located within the project tract. Structure Ch218 is recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP. This structure should be preserved in place until additional work can be done to determine definitively the structure's NRHP eligibility. Structure Ch219 is recommended not eligible for the NRHP. No further management consideration of this structure is recommended.
