Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive archeological survey performed by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in northern Paulding County where the Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to construct a 230/25/15 kV substation near Dabbs Bridge Road. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate any archeological resources that may be adversely affected by the construction of the substation. The survey was undertaken in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The area of potential effect for the project consists of approximately 8.9 ha (22 ac). The tract is predominately wooded but part of the area contains recently graded roads associated with a failed subdivision development. The entire tract represents old farmland and remnants of agricultural terraces are still visible. The eastern portion of the project area abuts a minor tributary. Dabbs Bridge Road forms part of the northern boundary of the tract. The project area was surface searched and shovel tested to locate evidence of archeological sites. A total of 34 shovel tests were dug. Two isolated prehistoric chipped stone artifacts were recorded as occurrences but no archeological sites were found within the tract. The artifact occurrences are not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Thus, we conclude that the construction of the proposed substation will have no effect to significant archeological resources and should be granted clearance to proceed.
