Abstract

In mid-June, 2000, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted a reconnaissance level archeological survey of approximately 355 acres in Murray County, Georgia. The Georgia Department of Transportation is proposing to build a road that will connect US 76/SR 282 and US 411/SR 61. The connector would cross Sugar Creek, which originates in the mountains that border the project to the east, and tie into US 411/SR 61 on the west side of the Sugar Creek valley. Total length of the new road would be about 1.6 km (1 mi). The final route has not been finalized; currently, nine different alternates or sub-alternates are under consideration (Figure 1). The goal of the archeological reconnaissance was to determine if any significant archeological sites are within the study area. If so, this preliminary archeological study could assist designers in choosing an alternate that would avoid such sites.
