Phase I Cultural Resources Survey Armuchee Ridges Ecosystem Restoration Project, Conasauga Ranger District, Chattooga, Floyd, Gordon and Walker Counties, Georiga USDA-FS NO. AG-4419-C-10-0017 (Vol. I and II)

R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of tracts included in the USDA/Forest Service's Armuchee Ridges ecosystem restoration project. The project area is located on the Conasauga Ranger District in Chattooga, Floyd, Gordon, and Walker Counties, Georgia. The project area is divided into 1 i Bid Items across 42 study units totaling 2,776 acres. These include: Pocket 1 (268 acres), Pocket 2 (14 acres), Narrows (336 acres), Taylors Ridge 1 (147 acres), Taylors Ridge 2 (243 acres), Mt. Joy (676 acres), Strawberry Mountain 1 (303 acres), Strawberry Mountain 2 (366 acres), Lake Marvin (77 acres), Furnace Valley (247 acres), and Divide TS (99 acres). The current field survey was conducted during the period of November 2, 2009 through April 2, 2010. The Phase I or "intensive" cultural resources survey, as technically defined in Section C.02 (in particular, Section C.02.2, entitled Survey Intensity Level) of the project Request for Proposals (USDA-FS NO. AG4419-C-10-0017), was performed to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (Public Law 89-665; 80 STAT.915; 16 U.S.C. 470). The purpose of the study was to locate and identify cultural resources within the project Area of Potential Effects (APE) and to assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria (36 CFR Part 60.4]. "Cultural resources" include archeological sites, historic structures, historic landscapes, and other entities that are 50 years old or older; the term is interchangeable with the regulatory term "historic properties".
