Abstract

A few weeks ago, HPD received a call from a forester regarding a possible mound in eastern Clay County. There was NRCS involvement, so the report was investigated by archaeologist Teresa Paglione of the Auburn, Alabama NRCS office. Ms. Paglione notified HPD that she had determined through shovel testing and visual inspection that the "mounds" are natural landforms, and the surrounding area has low probability for containing sites, No artifacts were found in the immediate vicinity, either in shovel tests or on the surface. The landowner reported having found "arrowheads" in fields ca. one kilometer to the east. Ms. Paglione did not visit the fields, which were being logged at the time. I have attached the marked up portion of the quad sheet that the forester provided. This is the Coleman, GA USGS Quad, and the location that was investigated is roughly UTM Zone 16, East 691600, North 3508400.
