Abstract

On September 11, 1997 Dr. Debbie Wallsmith of this office conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of a proposed laundry facility and septic system. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate any archaeological resources which might be impacted by the proposed development. The work was performed in response to a request made by Mr. Jack Weeks, Landscape Architect for Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division, Site Planning Unit. The proposed laundry/linen storage building will be built within the existing Mistletoe maintenance yard in an area where gravel, fill, etc. is currently stored. The drainage field for the septic tank will be located adjacent to the current storage yard and this was the area which was investigated (see attached maps). The drainage field will cover an area of approximately 40' by 120'. The vegetation in the project area is made up of hardwoods and pines with little undergrowth. Four shovel test units, measuring 40 cm', were dug to subsoil (usually 25 - 35 cm below surface). The soil stratigraphy was made up of a rocky pale yellow sandy clay topsoil overlying a yellowish red sandy clay subsoil. These test units were spaced 10 m apart. Additionally, the area around two boreholes drilled for percolation tests were examined. No archaeological material was recovered from the ground surface or in any of the shovel tests. Given the lack of archaeological material recovered from this area, I recommend that no further archaeological investigations are warranted in the specified project area.
