Abstract

A cultural resources reconnaissance survey of 2,055 ac (832 ha) in the Oconee National Forest in Jasper County, Georgia, along the Ocmulgee River was conducted for the U.S. Forest Service. Seventeen prehistoric and historic sites and eight artifact occurrences were located. The levee ridges and terraces along the Ocmulgee River yielded stratified, multicomponent prehistoric sites, in contrast to the nearby uplands which produced mostly nineteenth and early twentieth century house sites. Three aboriginal sites were recommended as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Eligibility could not be determined for one prehistoric site, six historic sites, and two rock pile sites. Five sites were determined to be ineligible.
