Abstract

As a consequence of discussions with Bob Monroe. Regional Supervisor. Game Management Section. Coastal Region VII and Harvey Young, Executive Assistant. Game and Fish Division. DNR. I went to Sapelo Island on 23 June 1992 to check the nature and extent of the effect of timbering activities on twc areas where archaeological sites have been identified. The two areas are: ( 11 an apparently undisturbed site consisting o f buried shell middens in a live oak grove where Cabretta Creek flows against the high gr ~u nd on the westerns i de of the marsh just south of the Cabretta Beach Road: 121a shell midden site occupying most of Long Row Field from Chocolate south to Draw Bar. These areas are presently under contract for timbering. I was concerned that the timbercutting , skidding and loading would have an adverse effect on these two archaeologically sensitive areas. I visited the two areas in question with Bob Monroe in order to check the areas under timbering contract against the defined boundaries of the archaeological sites.
