Abstract

The purpose of this project was to conduct an archaeological survey of the area to be impacted by construction of the City of Atlanta's proposed Constitution Road Combined Sewer Overflow Facility in DeKalb County, Georgia. Work on this project preceded under an authorization prepared on June 20. The field work was initiated on June 22 and completed the same day. The project contract required that a literature and records search be conducted in order to determine the nature and extent of known historical and archaeological resources in the project vicinity. The background research was conducted at the DeKalb Historical Society, the Atlanta Historical Society and the Site Records Office at the Georgia State Department of Anthropology. The results of this research will be reported in detail in Chapter II and III. The archaeological survey involved a surface investigation and subsurface testing within the area of proposed impact to ascertain the presence of archaeological remains. Those areas which contained cultural remains were intensively collected to determine the time period(s) present, and to salvage artifacts from these previously impacted sites. We would like to thank Gordon Midgette of the DeKalb Historical Society and Roy Dickens of the Department of Anthropology at Georgia State for their assistance with this project.
