Abstract

A Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed Canton Marketplace Development Tract in Cherokee County, Georgia was conducted in order to locate and identify cultural resources within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) of the project tract and to assess resource significance. The project area covers approximately 110 acres and is located along Canton Creek near it's confluence with the Etowah River in the City of Canton, Georgia. A total of seven archeological sites (Sites 9CK1202-9CK 1208) and four isolated finds were recorded. Occupations represented include the Early Archaic, and late 19th to middle 20th century. All seven of the archeological sites, and the four isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Five historic (over 50 years old) structures (CK-CM-1 through CK-CM-5) were recorded within or adjacent to the project tract. Alterations and additions to four of these structures (CK-CM-1, CK-CM-2, CK-CM-3, and CK-CM-5) detract from their stylistic integrity and adjacent nonhistoric buildings have reduced the integrity of the historic setting of one of the buildings. We were not allowed access to document one structure in the APE, CK-CM-4. Since this structure is shielded from the viewshed of the proposed project by topography and vegetation it will not be adversely effected by the proposed undertaking. Twelve structures within the project area (Structures 1-12) do not appear to be 50 years old, and are not eligible for consideration for NRHP eligibility.
