Abstract

As a result of design modifications and changes, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) currently is re-evaluating project EDS-565(11), Jenkins County, Georgia. Portions of the proposed project are within the boundaries of Magnolia Springs State Park. Proposed changes include a maximum of approximately 50 feet of required right-of-way on the eastern side of US 25/SR 121, improvements to park roads, and one sediment basin. One historic property, archaeological site 9JS1, is the' remains of Camp Lawton, a confederate prisoner of war camp located in Magnolia Springs State Park. The Department is requesting permission from the Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division, and the State Parks and Historic Sites Division, to conduct a limited archaeological survey in the near future. The archaeological survey will include the excavation of systematic shovel tests and metal detecting within the area of potential effect for the above referenced project.
