Abstract

Archaeology was conducted at the Ft. King George Historic Site in Darien, McIntosh County, Georgia, during the summer of 1984 as part of an organized effort to develop a comprehensive plan to manage the cultural resources of this sensitive area. This investigation, when combined with laboratory analysis and historic research, allows us to develop a more detailed understanding of the cultural resources that are present at the site, their distribution, and overall condition. The work, however, did not determine where the remains of Ft. King George are located, but it did provide new information that allows us to refine our knowledge of where the fort should be located and ideas of how to look for it in the future. This report combines a brief history of the Lower Bluff along the Darien River with a description of the archaeology that was conducted. I have made no effort to reanalyze the materials that were excavated by Joseph Caldwell, Sheila Caldwell, William Kelso or Marian Brasington, the earlier excavators at the site. This reanalysis was beyond the scope of work for the project and the operational budget. Since little of the results of this work have been published and this work produced significant amounts of information concerning the historic and prehistoric occupation of the bluff area, such a reanalysis should be the object of future projects.
