An archaeological and historical review was conducted of the Ocmulgee National Monument, Bibb County, Georgia. Archaeological research identified sites in the vicinity of the monument, delineated boundaries of these sites, and provided an overview of river valley settlement models. The historical review recovered and summarized records of the Native American presence in the area, from initial contact with Europeans in the sixteenth century through final acquisition of the land from the Creek Indians in 1825. Historical research also examined documents associated with the establishment of the Ocmulgee National Monument in 1936. This research identified a number of problem areas in both the archaeological and historical records. Archaeological methods vary considerably in identifying archaeological sites and their boundaries. Historical records are inconclusive in providing documentation of methods for defining the boundaries of the Ocmulgee National Monument.
