Abstract

This addendum report discusses the findings of a reevaluation survey undertaken to address project changes for GDOT Projects STP00-0155-01 (023), CSNHS-0007-00(251), and STP00- 0155-01(022), P.l. No. 322470, 0007251, and 322460, Houston and Twiggs Counties, Georgia. These projects collectively involve the widening of SR 96 and the reconstruction of the SR 96 at I-16 interchange. Fieldwork was undertaken for this reevaluation in November and December of 2010 by GDOT archaeologists. Field survey resulted in the identification and recordation of six new sites (9TW189-9TW194) and revisits at two previously recorded sites (9TW12 and 9TW1 06). These sites included both prehistoric and historic components; the cultural association of the prehistoric components is unknown, but the historic components represent late-19th to mid-20t century domestic occupations. It is recommended that one of these newly recorded sites 9TW(DOT)9/9TW189 be considered in ineligible for the NRHP, while the remaining sites be considered overall unknown in eligibility. However, the portions of these sites within the proposed project limits are evaluated as non-contributing to a finding of eligibility, and thus project clearance is recommended for these areas. It is further recommended, however, that special provisions be put into place to protect the area of these sites that are unknown and/or are outside the project limits, during the course of the project's development.
