Abstract

On 7 August 2003, Brockington and Associates, Inc., performed intensive archaeological resources survey (Phase I) within the approximately five acre project tract for the proposed Wooten Lake substation in Cobb County, Georgia. The survey was conducted for Georgia Transmission Corporation to determine the effects of the proposed substation on archaeological resources. Survey tasks were completed in compliance with criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended), by personnel qualified under the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards (36 CFR Part 61 ). Background research was conducted at the Georgia Archaeological Site File (University of Georgia, Athens) to determine if any previously recorded archaeological sites were present in the project's Area of Potential Effect (APE). No recorded archaeological sites were recorded within the project corridor. Phase I archaeological survey consisted of excavation of screened shovel tests at 30 meter (100ft) intervals across the entire project area. Additionally, all exposed ground surfaces and slopes were visually inspected. Soils consisted primarily of brown silty sand over red clay and shovel tests averaged 50 em (20 in) below surface. No archaeological sites were identified during the field survey. Archaeological resources clearance is recommended.
