Phase I Cultural Resources Survey of the Peninsula at Golden Isles Development, Glynn County, Georgia

In August of 2006, Brockington and Associates, Inc. completed a Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Fowler Road Property in Forsyth County, Georgia. Field Survey involved the examination of the landscape, vegetation, and ground surface, as well as the excavation of screened shovel tests at 30-meter (100-ft) intervals within the 27-acre project boundary. The survey was conducted under contract with Register-Nelson in McDonough, Georgia. Survey work was completed in compliance with criteria defined under Section 106 of the National Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended), and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act of 1948 [33 USC 1344] (as amended), by personnel qualified under the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards (36CFR Part 61 - Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation. Initial background research determined that no previously recorded archaeological sites are within the boundaries of the project area. Furthermore, there are no historic structures, bridges, cemeteries, resource groups, or NRHP listed properties within 2 miles of the Fowler Road property. One previously unrecorded archaeological site, 9F0546 (Fowler Strand), was recorded during the current survey (Figure 1). This site was identified through a low-density lithic and ceramic artifact scatter, likely the result of a short-term prehistoric occupation of the elevated ridge located in the central portion of the property. In the opinion of the Principal Investigator, this resource does not meet the eligibility criteria for listing on the NRHP and the proposed undertaking of the property will have no adverse effects on any resources either listed or eligible for listing on the NRHP. No further archaeological work is recommended.
