Abstract

On 9 April 2007, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted Phase I archaeological survey at the Magnolia Cemetery in Houston County, Georgia (Figure 2.1 ). The Magnolia Cemetery is a modem, active cemetery owned and operated by Magnolia Cemeteries, LLC, Warner Robins, Georgia. The cemetery is located on the north side of State Road 96 (SR 96) in Houston County. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is widening SR 96 from a two-lane facility to a four-lane divided facility from approximately 0.4 miles east of the I-75/SR96 interchange to just east of US 129/SR 247. The road improvements will require a small portion of the Magnolia Cemetery Land in order to construct a gravity (fill) wall adjacent to the roadway to minimize slope impacts to the cemetery. The wall will be in the existing right-ofway (ROW), however slight encroachment onto the cemetery parcel may be necessary to build the wall. This new ROW will be west of the cemetery driveways and is necessary to maintain the 16 foot ROW offset from the edge of the pavement. No graves will be disturbed or relocated as a result of this project. Although no graves will be disturbed, The Official Code of Georgia Annotated [OCGA] 1991 , Section 36 Chapter 72-5 requires a Change of Land Use permit for any ground disturbing activities on cemetery land. As part of the permit application process, the law requires an archaeological survey delineating the extent of the cemetery.
