Abstract

New South Associates, Inc. surveyed the approximately six mile long, 300 foot wide, West Cobb Loop corridor with a two person crew between July 19 and 23, 1993. The area surveyed closely follows the originally proposed Alternate 1, which runs mostly along Noses Creek. Three sites and five isolated finds were encountered by the archeological survey. One of the sites, WCL-5, appears to have some subsurface integrity and is recommended for Phase II testing. The other sites, historic site WCL-3 and site WCL-8, a lithic scatter, and the isolated finds are not recommended for further work. The one area felt to be especially sensitive prior to the survey, the area of recorded Civil War entrenchments near a trailer park at Macland Road, turned out not to contain such remains. The architectural survey encountered 11 sites containing structures over 50 years old. Of these sites, two appear to be potentially eligible for the National Register. None of the structures will be directly impacted by construction. The two potentially eligible structures will be visually impacted, however; and it is recommended that additional work be conducted to determine their eligibility for nomination to the National Register.
