Abstract

An intensive archaeological resources survey was carried out for the proposed McFarland Road Substation and Transmission Line in Forsyth County, Georgia. The project was carried out in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. Three possible substation locations were surveyed, with a total area of approximately 5.3 hectares (13 acres). The project also encompasses a transmission line tract with two partial alternative routes with a total length of approximately 3.7 km (2.3 mi). The project area lies just east of the border between Forsyth and Fulton Counties and west of Big Creek, primarily along the present route of McFarland Road. The proposed transmission line tract from east of the intersection of McFarland and Union Hill Roads, continuing across Highway 19 to the county line. The proposed substation tracts are all located to the south of the proposed transmission line. Two are adjacent to James Road, near the intersection of James Road and Union Hill Road. The other proposed tract borders on McFarland Road, extending to the south. Background research was conducted at the State Site Files database, maintained by the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia, Athens. Six previously recorded archaeological sites were identified within one mile of the project tract, but no previously identified historic and prehistoric archaeological resources were located within the project area boundaries.

No archaeological sites were identified during fieldwork. The proposed project will not affect any previously recorded archaeological resources. No additional archaeological resources investigations are recommended for this project.
