Abstract

This report discusses the findings of the testing of a linear feature at previously recorded archaeological site 9CNl85 for GDOT Project STP00-0 164-01 (OD), P.I. #721440, Clayton and Fayette Counties, Georgia. This GDOT project involves the widening of SR 54 from just north of McDonough Road in Fayette County to US 19AJS 41ITara Boulevard in Clayton County for a distance of 5.3 miles. Fieldwork was undertaken for this testing in October of 2012 by GDOT archaeologists. Work involved the excavation of a 0.5 meter (m) x 3 m slot trench to investigate a linear feature recorded during the survey identifying and delineating the site in November of 2011 (reported in June of 2012). This excavation revealed that the linear feature had no notable characteristics of a Civil War earthwork and that it could not be further associated with the Civil War material previously recorded as a component of the site. It is concluded that this feature is either a natural feature on the landscape or is a product of non-Civil War-related land disturbing or shaping activities in the area, such as terracing for agriculture. No further management for this feature as part of this site is warranted, and project clearance is recommended.
