Abstract

Site 9HE161 is a prehistoric archaeological site exhibiting a primary Late Woodland (Late Swift Creek/Napier) component and a secondary Middle Woodland (Cartersville) component. The site is located approximately 10.8 kilometers (6.7 miles) southeast of Franklin, Georgia, in Heard County. The site is adjacent (east) to U.S. Highway 27/State Route 1 (US27/SR1), and northeast of the US27/SR1 crossing of Potato Creek (now West Point Lake). Site 9HE161 is located on a creek terrace, adjacent to West Point Lake and approximately 50 meters (approximately 164 feet) northwest of the former course of Potato Creek.
