Abstract

The proposed project would consist of various pedestrian upgrades along SR 28 (Greene Street) in downtown Augusta, from 5th Street to 12th Street, in Richmond County, Georgia (Figure 1). The project would include the following activities: Installation of new controller cabinets. Placement of new mast arms at 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th Streets, including overhead radar detection units. Replacement of signals at 5th and 12th Streets. Installation of ADA-compliant curb cuts, pedestrian poles, and crosswalks at all intersections. Installation of new electrical service. Installation of fiber optic communications cable along the south side of Green St. Installation conduit between pull boxes; the conduit will be directionally bored, so that the only trenching would include short runs between a pull box and the adjacent cabinet or pole foundation. This conduit will be bored at a depth of 4’ below pavement.

Due to the upgrades associated with traffic signal equipment, the railroad equipment must also be upgraded. This work will take place along the existing Norfolk Southern railroad at 6th St. Along 6th St., the circuit points in a loop will be replaced; this replacement will involve the removal and replacement of a 3’x4’ patch of pavement in two locations, at the beginning and ending of the circuit loops. These points are located approximately 509 feet from the center point of the Greene St./SR 28 and 6th St. intersection in the north and south directions along the 6th St. Please see Figure 2 for the location of these points. No additional work will occur between these points.
