Abstract

This document is to summarize the preliminary findin9 of an archaeological and engineering study of the Confederate ironclad, C.S.S. Georaia (Figure 1). The results are based on historical, field and laboratory data gathered during this Phase I study. This summary is to provide the sponsor, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, with a preliminary archaeological and engineering assessment of the wreck site and its surrounding environment. The objectives, methods, and analysis results and management recommendations are presented in the subsequent section. All findings are preliminary but represent ninety percent of analyzed data. It is believed that recommendations predicated on this data base are realistic and should not change radically in the light of the residual, unanalyzed data.
