Abstract

Cultural Resource Inventory and Evaluation studies document the results of Resource Inventory I and II investigations on a 770 acre recreational tract of land (A-1) within the Wallace Dam Project; Greene County, Georgia. The Resource Inventory I (RI-I) phase was completed concurrently with Resource Inventory II (RIII) fieldwork. RI-I studies were conducted by the project archaeologist and historian in an effort to assess and evaluate the current data base (i.e. state site files and pertinent archival materials) for information relating to the defined study area. The results of the RI-I studies were the development of environmental and cultural contexts for the study area and the relocation of 10 previously recorded cultural properties. RI-II studies consisted of field survey and evaluation. Field methods (i.e. 30m shovel cuts) employed during survey were designed to locate, identify and delineate cultural properties (Kintigh 1988; Lynch 1980; Nance 1979: and Nance & Ball 1986). Shovel tests and larger formal units were utilized in evaluation of properties discovered for determination of significance and eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). The report which follows describes the results of both Resource Inventory I and Resource Inventory II investigations. Chapters 1,2 and 3 serve as an introduction to the RI-I studies, which compiled known data relating to the environment and the prehistoric and historic cultural context of the study area. Chapter 4 (Methods of Investigations) consists of brief statements concerning the research orientation and methods employed during Resource Inventory II. This chapter serves as an introduction to Chapter 5, which presents summary descriptions that focus on temporal placement, current environmental conditions and degree of preservation of each cultural property and component identified during this project. Chapters 5 & 6 summarize the results achieved during the RII and RI-II phases of this project and presents an assessment of the National Register eligibility for the cultural properties discovered as well as management summary information and recommendations.
