Abstract

The cultural resources survey of the proposed 8.4 km (5.5 mi) Rocky Mountain to Plant Hammond transmission line and switching station located 9 archeological sites and 5 isolated artifact occurrences. No structures older than 50 years were within view of the proposed line. Seven of the sites are prehistoric lithic scatters and two are historic artifact scatters with no structural remains. We recommend that all 9 sites and 5 occurrences are ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places. Table 1 summarizes pertinent site information. The sites were recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places because they failed to meet Criterion D, which is an assessment of a site having the potential to yield important information. All 9 sites had little or no integrity through erosion, plowing, and timber harvesting and planting. Most sites were characterized by sparse artifact scatters and artifact density was not great at any site, leading us to conclude that none could contribute significantly more data than had already been gathered from this survey. It is the opinion of the principal investigator that no potentially eligible cultural resources will be impacted by the proposed Rocky Mountain to Plant Hammond transmission line and switching station and that, in regard to cultural resources, the project be given clearance to proceed.
