Abstract

The construction and operation of the proposed runway Approach Lighting System (ALS) for Runway 5 on land leased by Robins AFB would impact archaeological site 9Ht56, which is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The ALS is needed because of an increase in Robins AFB's flight operations mission over the past several years, which in tum is due to additional missions being assigned to the base by the United States Air Force (USAF) and an increased tempo in the war on terrorism. The project is in the northeastern portion of the base, and would consist of the installation of a series of high intensity lights and light bars over a 3,000-foot length extending northeast from the northern e d of Runway 15. The concrete footings for each set of lights would be approximately 100 feet apart.
