Abstract

GT Hill Planners Corporation conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey for the Proposed Bridge Replacement over Standing Boy Creek on CR 386/Fortson Road, Harris County, Georgia. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) proposed project CSBRG-0008-00(600) would consist of the replacement of the existing bridge (Structure ID 145-0055-0) carrying Fortson Road over Standing Boy Creek, approximately one mile east of I-185. The proposed project would replace the bridge at its existing location, and traffic would be maintained during construction via an off-site detour. Existing right-of-way (ROW) is 50 feet, and the proposed ROW would vary from 85 to 95 feet. The project begins approximately 200 feet north of the CR 386/Fortson Road intersection with Turkey Trail and ends approximately 460 feet north of the bridge at Standing Boy Creek Road for a total length of 0.22 miles. The APE is defined as the existing and proposed ROW. The existing Fortson Road ROW is approximately 50 feet wide, while the proposed ROW would vary from 85 to 95 feet in width and would be approximately 1,200 feet in length. An Expanded Survey Corridor (ESC) of additional 100-foot width beyond each side of the APE was surveyed. According to GNAHRGIS, there are two recorded sites within 1 km of the proposed project. Sites 9HS314 and 9HS315 are a historic house site and a historic artifact scatter. Both sites are in excess of 900 m from the proposed project, and they were recommended ineligible for the National Register. One new site was recorded; site 9HS513 consists of two stone and concrete bridge abutments located on each site of Standing Boy Creek, approximately 14 m west of the existing bridge, and they are approximately 12.5 m apart. Site 9HS513 was evaluated for eligibility for listing in the NRHP under Criteria A, C, and D, and it was found to be not eligible under these criteria. Therefore, the site is recommended not eligible for the National Register.
