Abstract

Cardno, Inc. (Cardno) has completed archaeological and historic resources survey of part of the proposed Dalton Expansion Project, in Georgia. This letter details Cardno's findings and management recommendations specifically for two pipe yards, provisionally designated as the Calhoun 1 and Calhoun 2 pipe yards, temporary facilities proposed as a part of construction (Figure 1). These will be temporary-use facilities that will serve as equipment and material storage areas during construction. Possible modifications to these yards include the installation of perimeter fencing, temporary lighting, and the laying of a bed of gravel to existing ground surfaces. The yards will be returned to their original state following construction.

The proposed Calhoun 1 and Calhoun 2 pipe yards are located 3.25 miles southeast of Calhoun, Georgia, in south-central Gordon County. Calhoun 1 is located on the south side of Old Belwood Rd. and Calhoun is located on the north side. They are both immediately west of Interstate (I)-75, this portion of which is also known as the Larry McDonald Memorial Highway. Calhoun 1 is a rectilinear tract that measures 3.80 acres in area, while Calhoun 2 is a polygonal tract measuring 8.22 acres in total area. Little vegetation remains on either pipe yard beyond a few patches of grass. The majority of Calhoun 1 has been paved as a parking lot and most of Calhoun 2 is also concrete.
