Abstract

A Phase I archaeological survey was conducted on April26-29, 2016 and November 7, 2016 for the proposed widening of SR 120 (GDOT Project No. STP00-0189-01(010), P.I. No. 721000, HPNo. 140204-011) in Fulton and Gwinnett counties, Georgia (Figure 1.1). The proposed project would widen SR 120, Abbotts Bridge Road, and reconstruct the route's bridge over the Chattahoochee River. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the survey area so that potential effects to identified resources could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted for GDOT under a contract with Calyx Engineers and Consultants.

Due to the fact that a portion of the survey area is situated on National Park Service property, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, an ARPA permit was applied for and obtained. The permit number is CHAT 2014-02 (Appendix F). An extension for this permit was requested and agreed to on September 21, 2015. A second extension was received on November 3, 2016. The proposed GDOT Project would widen SR 120/Abbotts Bridge Road from SR 141/Medlock Bridge Road to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard from two through lanes to four through lanes. The total project length is approximately 2.5 miles, which includes a 1,500 feet tie-in to SR 120 west of SR 141 and a 1,000 feet tie-in east of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. To accommodate additional turning movements, both SR 141 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard would be improved and widened for approximately 1,000 feet in each direction approaching SR 120. Parsons Road would also be improved and widened for 1,250 feet south of SR 120, and is proposed to include a roundabout at the Parsons Road/Wilson Road intersection. Boles Road would be improved for 1,000 feet north of SR 120. These improvements would also accommodate additional turning movements. All other side roads would be improved to a maximum of 500 feet from SR 120. The existing SR 120 bridge would be widened and/or reconstructed across the Chattahoochee River. All signalized intersections would be modified, but no additional signals would be necessary along the project corridor. Existing ROWs within the project corridor are approximately 60 to 130 feet wide. Proposed ROWs would be approximately 104 to 140 feet wide.
