Abstract

Subterranean Consultants (STC) performed a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Whiddon

telecommunications facility lease area and access/utility easement (hereafter also called survey area) on March 23,2016. The survey area is located in eastern Tift County in Tifton, Georgia (312 32' 17.74" N, 832 36' 57.98" W [UTM Zone 17, E251625.2 N34922245). The study was conducted for Terracon Consultants, Inc., on behalf of Verizon Wireless, in order to locate and identify archaeological resources and to assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria [36CFR Part 60.4 (a-d)].

An intensive Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Whiddon telecommunications facility was performed on March 23, 2016 in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The archaeological survey area was equal to the area of ground disturbing activity

(APE for direct effects), which was 100-ft. by 100-ft. (30-m by 30-m) proposed lease area, a 100-ft. by 30-

ft. (30-m by 9-m) proposed turn-around, and a 99.61-ft. by 30-ft. (30.3-m by 9-m) proposed access/utility

easement, which totals 0.36 acres (15988.3 sq. ft.). The survey area is located in eastern Tift County 14

km (8.6 mi) northeast of Tifton, Georgia and 738 m (2421 ft.) north of the intersection of Ty Ty Whiddon

Mill Road and Whiddon Mill Road (Figures 1-2). Billy McCarley performed the fieldwork and served as

principal investigator for this survey (Appendix B).

Because of the absence of archaeological materials within the survey area, it is recommended that the

current proposed telecommunications facility receive archaeological resource clearance; additional

archaeological work in the study area is not recommended at this time.
