In compliance with Section 106 of the Nationa1 Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRS-2556(5), Cherokee Co. has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.
This project consists of replacing the existing bridge over the L & N Railroad on S.R. 5 in Toonigh, Georgia. The project will begin at Toonigh Road and S.R. 5 and will terminate 350 to 400 feet west of the new Sixes Road connector. Existing right-of-way is approximately 80 feet throughout the project. Approximately 15-40 feet of additional right-of- way will be required.
The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeo1ogist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for 1nc1usion 1n the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
