Abstract

"In compliance with Section I 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project IM-20-2{178), Morgan County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

The proposed project would consist of the construction of a sewer line and water line to serve Rest Area #52 adjacent to I-20 in Morgan County. The project would begin at the reconstructed rest area and would end at the intersection of Cannon and Elder Roads. Two service mains would be constructed along the north side of 1-20 to the SR 12 Interchange. The water main would be constructed on the west side of SR 12 to connect with the existing water main at the intersection of Cannon Road. The sewer main would be constructed on the east side of SR 12 and would follow Cannon Road. This line would connect with the existing sewer main at the intersection of Elder Road. No additional right-of-way would be required for the completion of the proposed project. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor.

An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
