Abstract

Archaeological survey of the proposed I-675 corridors in 1975 identified the Soapstone Ridge as a 9eological entity situated in southern DeKalb County, Georgia. Numerous Archaic steatite quarry and workshop sites have been located on the ridge, but data has not been developed which would allow for nomination, at this time, of the entire ridge to the National Register of Historic Places. However, a 140 acre tract on Soapstone Ridge is currently listed on the NRH.

Dickens and Carnes report for GDOR, An Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Routes of I-675, listed eighty-six sites, sixty-two of which were actually on the ridge. Within the proposed right of the chosen

Alternative 11811, were four sites, 9Da69, 9Dal00, 9Dal04 and 9Cn45. Three of these sites (9Da l 00, 9Dal04 and (Cn45) do not meet the National Register eligibility requirements, based on the results of intensive archaeological survey performed by GDOT staff archaeologists.
