Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRZLB-227(9), Pickens County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) . The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. This project involves the replacement of the bridge over Town Creek on Convict Camp Road (C. R. 75). Plans indicate that the new bridge will be placed approximately 160ft. upstream of the existing bridge, with approaches on new alignment. Approaches will begin approximately 600ft. southeast of the existing bridge and will rejoin the existing corridor 400-500 ft. north of the existing bridge. Required right-of-way is 80ft. throughout the new alignment. An additional 40ft. of construction easement is required northeast of the corridor on the south side of the creek for the diversion of a small feeder stream. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
