Abstract

On July 27, 2017, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a survey of roughly .4 mile of SR 165 for the proposed bridge replacement at Sugar Creek in Dodge County, Georgia (Georgia Department of Transportation [GDOT] P.I. No. 0013823). The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological resources within the area of potential effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking so that potential effects to identified cultural resources could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project is located 1 mile southwest of Chauncey, in Dodge County, and consists of replacing the existing SR 165 bridge at Sugar Creek. In addition to the APE, a 100-foot buffer, or expanded survey corridor (ESC), was also surveyed per GDOT guidelines for Phase I survey. One new archaeological site, consisting of wooden pilings, wooden support walls, a raised earthen berm, and concrete sections, was recorded that were part of a former road crossing Sugar Creek. The site is recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion D. Below are a report summary table and keywords for this project.
