Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project F-042-2(21), Laurens-Wilkinson has been surveyed with respect to archaeo1ogica1 resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. Two passing lanes will be added on U.S. 441 with this project. Passing lane number 1 begins in Laurens County at M. P. 2.31 and ends at M.P. 0.43. From the beginning to M.P. 1.32, ten feet of additional R/W will be required on each side of the 100 feet of existing R/W. From M. P. 1.32 to M.P. 0.43, widening will require 20 feet of R/W west of existing. Passing lane number 2 begins at M.P. 0.33 in Laurens Co. and ends at M.P. 1.42 in Wilkinson Co. 20 feet of R/W will be required west of the existing 100 feet. The bridge over South Sandy Creek will be replaced, between the passing lanes. A detour will be constructed on the west side of the existing bridge.
