Abstract

Grove Creek crossing on County Road 52 between Maysville and Horner, Georgia.  Replace existing 107' x 13' wood bridge with 170' x 36' concrete bridge on new alignment.  Place approximately 7500 cubic yards of fill material below the 100-year flood elevation covering approximately 1.3 acres. Erosion control will be grassing, baled straw and stone rip-rap at bridge end rolls. On June 18, 1979, a number of District One bridge projects were surveyed by Chad Barley, DOT Staff Archaeologist, for potential impacts on the local cultural resources.  As currently designed, additional right-of-way on new alignment is planned for project BROLB-0011(1), on Converse Water Works Road over Grove Creek. This shift places the proposed center line directly through a large mound, interpreted as a possible temple mound by the archaeologist. Over 50 sherds of aboriginal ceramics were collected on the mound's surface thereby confirming its existence as an archaeological site. Additional reconnaissance in the fields immediately surrounding this feature did not locate any other artifacts. Therefore, it is recommended that the plans be altered, with the right-of-way moved off the mound, preferably keeping to the existing roadway. In the event any new right-of-way is acquired, the area should be checked by the archaeologist to rule out the possibility of related sites.
