Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, the project has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines'' developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist.

S.R. 16/U.S. 27 Alt. will be widened and improved from the Newnan City Limits to the Clark Street/Temple Avenue fork. Existing right-of- way is 80 feet from the City Limits to approximately 580 feet east of Hospital Road. Required right-of-way is 100 feet in this section. Existing right-of-way is 50 feet through the balance of the project corridor. Required right-of-way is 86 feet in this section. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor. It is concluded therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
