In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, the project has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.
The project will affect approximately 1,000 feet of trackage of the Central of Georgia Railroad grade separation on State Route 16 north of Whitesburg, Georgia. Up to 100 feet of right of way will be required south of existing right of way. In addition, up to 100 feet of right of way will be required north of existing right of way on CR 809 to relocate the intersection of that road with SR 16.
The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor. It is concluded therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
