Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, the project has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

This new location section of the project is located in the Sand Hill Community and is approximately 9 tenths of a mile long. The new location section begins at County Road 416 and ties back into State Route 61 just beyond the intersection of State Route 61 and County Roads 394 and 540. Required right of way for this section will be up to 200 feet.

The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor. It is concluded therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
