Abstract

This project is located within and above the southern floodplain of Gum Swamp Creek just west of County Road 161. A surface inspection resulted in the collection of numerous chert flakes, one small projectile point (possibly dating to the Mississippian Period), and several unidentified prehistoric pot sherds. Several randomly placed shovel tests revealed the preserve of a midden layer ranging in depth from 4 inches to 6 inches containing charcoal and decaying organic material throughout. This site has been designated 9Dg(DOT)l by the GDOT Staff Archaeologist. The site is significant to the further understanding of Georgia's prehistory. The suggestion was made that an alternate location be selected for the borrow pit.

A second location was surveyed following the determination that the site located south of the creek was significant enough to warrant intensive investigations before it could be utilized as a borrow pit area. This second area is located on a moderately steep slope overlooking the northern flood-plain of Gum Swamp Creek. No artifacts were present on the surface. Further shovel tests within the area did not reveal the presence of buried cultural materials.
