Abstract

New South Associates completed the Phase I Archaeological Survey for the Bainbridge Riverwalk project in response to a request from York & Associates Engineering. The project was completed in advance of the installation of a walking trail (to be known as the Riverwalk) that the City of Bainbridge has proposed to further develop the Bainbridge city park. The survey consisted of systematic subsurface testing and visual inspection of the project area. The purpose of this study was to determine if archaeological sites are present in the project area and to evaluate their potential for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Prior to fieldwork, an Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) permit (DACW01-4-12- 0752) was obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for this investigation.

Two previously recorded sites (9DR197 and 9DR 208) have been recorded immediately adjacent to the project area. The field crew attempted to determine if any portion of the previously recorded sites fall in the project area. No artifacts related to these sites were recovered and it appears that the sites are located outside of the project area. One new archaeological site (9DR223) was identified as the result of the survey. Site 9DR233 is primarily a 1940s-era trash dump that is recommended not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP as it likely contains little archaeological potential. Provided concurrence with these findings by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), no further work is necessary to satisfy Section 106 requirements and the planned undertaking may proceed.
